A little about my background, and how I try to make math make sense — for every student, in every session.
Making math make sense is the goal of every session. Not just getting to the answer, but actually understanding why it's right.
I'm a lifetime lover and learner of math. Originally from Portland, Oregon, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Oregon in 2010 with degrees in mathematics and economics.
Following graduation, I moved to Shanghai, China, where I taught both math and English to international students at Shanghai High School, International Division. I was the first foreign math teacher in the school's history, and taught Honors Calculus and Probability and Statistics to 12th graders.
After two years of teaching in Shanghai, I returned to the U.S., where I've applied my math skills in various corporate jobs. I still love to teach (and learn about!) math, so I make time to help up-and-coming students learn to understand — and hopefully love — math.
Math is often seen as arcane and endlessly puzzling — a subject devoted to memorizing long equations and mastering confusing variables. My goal is to help you see math in a way that isn't about memorization and rote application, but rather as a field that makes sense once you understand the why behind each equation and each variable. When you understand the why, memorization becomes far less important, because the equations and formulas start to make sense on their own.
My former students have scored perfect math SAT scores and gone on to some of the most prestigious universities in the country — UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and New York University, to name a few.
Let's work together and make math make sense.
